Everything You Need to Know About Recycling in Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax

Last week we hosted the Jurisdictional Recycling Webinar where we covered best practices and what the multifamily housing industry should know about recycling. County officials from Arlington County, Alexandria County, and Fairfax County spoke about the rules and guidelines in each of their jurisdictions. Alexandria City


Arlington County

  • All apartments and multifamily dwellings are required to recycle and to have a current Trash and with the Solid Waste Bureau.
  • Each multifamily dwelling is required to submit and maintain an up-to-date Trash and Recycling Plan
  • Visit retrac.com/registration/arlington-county to access your Re-TRAC account and update and/or complete your yearly plan.
  • Materials to be recycled: aluminum and metal cans, cardboard, metal household items (large household appliances, bicycles, cabinets, doors, grills, iron furniture, etc.),
  • Conducts an annual inspection; a Microsoft Office form is sent annually to all property managers
  • Annual Inspections includes, among others:
    • Sanitary and serviceable compactors/dumpsters/wheeled carts
    • Annual and posted education
    • New tenant and new hire education
    • Colocation of trash and recycling bins

Fairfax County

  • Owners of multi-family dwelling units must provide a recycling system for residents to source-separate cardboard and mixed paper, metal food and beverage containers, plastic bottles and jugs, and scrap metal.
  • Property Managers are responsible for the following:
    • Waste and recycling systems must be of sufficient capacity.
    • Any refuse container with a capacity of 2 cubic yards or greater must be accompanied by one or more recycling collection containers with a volume equal or greater than 25% of the refuse container.
    • Recyclables collection containers must be clearly labeled.
    • All tenants must be notified about recycling program requirements.
    • Keep the area around collection containers free from litter.
