Virginia's Non-Payment of Rent Process Changes July 1st

Effective today, July 1st, Virginia’s nonpayment of rent process will change as a result of the expiration of the law that requires landlords and tenants to apply for rent relief.
In sum, landlords who own 5 or more rental dwelling units must continue to serve 14 day notices to pay or enter a payment plan. The only change is that the notice no longer needs to contain language regarding the rent relief program.
Landlords who own 4 or fewer rental dwelling units must continue to serve 14 day notices to pay or quit. The only change is that the notice no longer needs to contain language regarding the rent relief program.
Even though the law no longer requires that landlords notify tenants of the rent relief program, the RRP still has hundreds of millions of dollars left to pay out to landlords. As a result, NVAA strongly urges all landlords to continue taking advantage of the program and working with residents to apply for rent relief.
Effective July 1st other new landlord-tenant laws take effect in Virginia, which you can learn about by contacting one of us.
